CHAPTER 16

“Hey Eddie! Hold up!”

Eddie could hardly hear Rick’s calls through the two-way radio, causing him to drive several yards ahead. When he finally did hear Rick’s instruction for him to stop, he turned back and parked his snowmobile along the edge of the road. Not that there was any road left. Right now, there was simply a fifteen-foot gap between the trees that had been completely blanketed in snow and ice.

Rick and Simon were standing near the tree line, staring at a portion of snow that appeared to have been mashed up. There were signs of tire tracks, as well as general shallowness compared to the surrounding snow, as though it had been dug out.

“Looks like somebody had a little spin-out,” Rick said.

“And they had snow shovels on hand,” Simon said.

“Holy shit,” Eddie said, impressed. “That means somebody actually came out here.”

“With intent to stay a while,” Rick added.

“We still don’t know for sure if it’s the perps, so we can’t call the Sheriff yet,” Simon said. There was a change of tone in his voice. Despite expressing doubt, he was now starting to believe the possibility that Rick’s hunch might have been a good one.

“Then let’s get on it,” Rick said. “Just a reminder: these bastards are armed and dangerous. They’ve already killed two people, one of them a cop. Which means they probably won’t hesitate to put a round in us.”

“I’m well aware,” Eddie said. He got back on his snowmobile and completed a U-turn, driving further ahead without waiting for his buddies. Rick and Simon quickened their pace in an effort to catch up.

They traveled the winding path, enduring the icy blast of wind that assaulted every square inch of their bodies. Rick and Simon traveled side-by-side, keeping a close eye on the road for any clues. The snow and wind had eliminated almost every trace of tire tracks during the night. Additionally, they had to avoid debris on the road. The storm had shaken an array of branches from the trees and scattered them over the surface.

“Fuck!” Simon muttered, feeling the reverberation of his snowmobile hitting a branch.

“Careful,” Rick said. They weaved around a few obstacles, then caught up with Eddie, who had stopped at a fork in the road. It was clear from how he was staring at it that he wasn’t sure which way to go.

“I wanna say they went right,” he said. “The snow on the left looks smoother to me. Less disturbed. However you want to describe it.”

“I get what you mean,” Rick said. “However, how do we describe this?” he worked his way several meters down the small hill and brushed the snow from the side of a tree, fully revealing the scraping in the bark. There were traces of white paint embedded in the marking, almost grey in color. The vehicle was not very old.

“I don’t believe old Steve gave a description of the vehicle they were driving, did he?”

“No. He did not,” Eddie answered.

“Somebody clearly went this way,” Rick said.
